World Hepatitis Day is being celebrated today in Sylhet like the rest of the country with the motto 'Now is the time to take action'. On 28th July 2008, 'World Hepatitis Alliance' took the initiative to celebrate Hepatitis Day to make the world aware. In 2011, the World Health Organization recognized World Hepatitis Day. Since then the day is celebrated on 28th July every year. According to the World Health Organization, about 1 crore people are infected with hepatitis B and C virus in Bangladesh. More than 20,000 people die of hepatitis every year in the country. According to a study by the Liver Foundation of Bangladesh Hepatology Society, 76 percent of the patients who come to the hospital for treatment with jaundice are infected with hepatitis virus. The program includes rallies, talks, and discussions.
