Bangladesh Betar, Sylhet
Considering the historical, natural and geographical uniqueness of Sylhet, the construction of a transmitter building with two studios was started in 1958 in Tilagarh to establish a radio station. The first program was broadcast on September 1, 1961 through a transmitter with a power of two kilowatts. At that time, there was only a relay station. From October 27, 1967, its own programs were started. Only music was broadcast for a few months. From July 1968, kothika and drama were added. Sylhet Betar started its journey as a full-fledged regional center in 1970. With the increase in the activities and demand of the radio, the number of officials and employees of Sylhet Betar increased. Therefore, on January 20, 1971, official work began in a 15-room house in Mir Maidan, about five kilometers west-south of Tilagarh. A temporary recording studio was built here in 1972. In the financial year 1978-79, a significant project was undertaken to build a full-fledged studio for the Sylhet center. Most of the studio equipment was provided by the Australian Government. Under this project, four studios, a control room, and a booth for announcements and recording and editing rooms were built. A 25 kW power generator was installed. A three-story building with 45 rooms was also built on 2.67 acres of land next to the old building. The building was officially inaugurated on 08 March 1980 (24 Falgun, 1386 Bangabhab). The power of the Sylhet Center's projection device was increased from two kilowatts to twenty kilowatts on 22 November 1978. Sylhet Betar has made considerable progress in broadcasting programs. In two sessions, a total of 23 hours of programs are being broadcast daily on medium wave and FM waves. Since 2007, FM broadcasting of this center has started through an FM transmitter of 105.0 MHz wave with a power of 01 (one) kilowatt. In April 2012, another 10 (ten) kilowatt FM transmitter of 88.8 MHz wave was installed and the program broadcasting started through it. In June 2013, a 05 (five) kilowatt FM transmitter of 90.0 MHz wave was installed and the program broadcasting started through it. At present, various programs are being broadcast on three FM waves in addition to medium wave. During the program broadcasting, listeners participate in the program by sending SMS and phone-in through mobile phones. In addition to four local news bulletins and entertainment programs every day, these programs broadcast on women and child development, agriculture, health and family planning, education and information technology, developmental and public importance issues are very popular in Sylhet region. In this way, Sylhet Betar is making an important contribution to the program broadcasting.
