Like the rest of the country, Safe Motherhood Day is being celebrated today in Sylhet. The main aim of the day is to ensure safe maternal health, reduce maternal mortality and ensure newborn health. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina declared Safe Motherhood Day on 28 May 1997. Since then the day is being celebrated in Bangladesh. In 2015, the World Health Organization included this initiative in sustainable development. According to the United Nations and the World Health Organization, around 800 women die every day in childbirth in the world. And at least seven million women suffer from serious health problems after childbirth. Besides, another 50 million women suffer from various health complications after childbirth. According to the WHO, 12,000 women die every year in Bangladesh from pregnancy and pregnancy-related causes. In our country, the maternal mortality rate is 165 out of every 100,000 births.
